The man in the green hood should be Simon of Cyrene, who was enlisted to help Jesus with the carrying of the cross. On the right two soldiers are doing nothing helpful. The headgear of the man on the left suggests he might be one of the temple priests.

Hanging at Jesus' knee is a square plaque, most likely studded with nails that are pointing down. According to Guilbeau, items of this sort are variants of the "stumblingblocks" seen in late-medieval images that referred to Psalm 139:6, "they have laid for me a stumblingblock by the wayside."
